Consumer Symposium

Considerations for Statewide Consumer Organizations: A Symposium

March 10, 2008
10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The NC Council of Community Programs sponsoring a symposium for people with disabilities who are interested strengthening the consumer movement by learning new approaches to leadership, collaboration, and statewide organization. The symposium is part of a project funded by the General Assembly to start a new, statewide consumer support and advocacy organization.

Who will lead the Symposium?
Joseph A. Rogers, a national consultant will lead the event. He has set up more than two dozen consumer-run programs, organized the first national consumer conference, and advocated for improved community-based services.
Joseph served on the Congressional Task Force on the Rights and Empowerment of Americans with Disabilities, which was instrumental in getting the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act passed, and on the Executive Committee of the President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. He is a past president of the board of directors and a former chairman of the advisory board of Pennsylvania Protection & Advocacy, Inc.
He has appeared on numerous television and radio shows, ranging from the Oprah Winfrey Show to Science Friday on National Public Radio, to talk about consumer issues and the rights of people with disabilities.
As part of the symposium, Joseph will moderate a panel discussion of consumer leaders in North Carolina.

What will you learn?
The session will:
Review the recent history of the consumer movement in North Carolina and across the country.
Facilitate discussion about challenges facing the consumer movement right now.
Present ideas to strengthen the collaboration among existing organizations of people with disabilities.
Recruit organizers for a new grassroots, statewide, networking and advocacy organization for people with disabilities.

What is the cost?
There is no charge for the Symposium but you must register in advance to reserve a space.

Who is eligible to participate?
The symposium is intended for people with disabilities who are in a leadership role or people who are interested in becoming leaders in the future. If you are interested or just curious then you should attend.

Where will the symposium be offered?
The training will be held at the NC Council Conference Center located at 3801 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh; Directions are on the attached registration form.

What is the deadline for registration?
The deadline is March 5, 2008 but the registration will be cut off after the first 120 people are registered.
