Modern Analytic Group Theory and Method

MODERN ANALYTIC

GROUP THEORY AND METHOD

STARTS FALL 2008 CHAPEL HILL

Individual work (analysis) opens the door to relationship with self;
group opens the door to relationship with other people!

♦ I’ve been leading psychotherapy groups for 17 years. About 10 years ago I attended a Special Institute in Modern Analytic Group Process at the American Group Psychotherapy Association Conference. The experience transformed the way I think about and lead groups.
♦ Group therapy continues to provide the same benefits: instillation of hope, normalization of feelings, support, and a safe, confidential, therapeutic space to explore relationship with others.
♦ The Modern Analytic Group Model, with its focus on immediacy, (the here-and-now in the group) provides the opportunity for ‘live action’ of the issues one is challenged by in everyday life. The conflicts and difficulties participants may have with i.e., trust, letting others in, expressing and asserting oneself, and self-sabotage behavior, will become known to self and others through the group process.
♦ Techniques, (not usually found in traditional psychotherapy groups), such as bridging, used to strengthen emotional connections between members, or to develop connections where they did not exist before, creates a dynamic interaction among group members. Resistances are also approached in very creative ways.
♦ Having been both leader and participant in modern analytic group therapy, the learning about one’s defenses and resistances, blocks to contact, connection, and intimacy coupled with methods that foster abundant space for authentic expression and genuine connection energizes and inspires my personal and professional life.
