Perdue's commitment to a Greener North Carolina

A message from Bev Perdue, NASW-NC's endorsement for Governor

Dear Friend,
Yesterday, I called on the NC Division of Air Quality to hold off on approving the proposed coal power plant at Cliffside, NC.North Carolina’s priority must be on creating long-range goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with a focus on increasing energy efficiency and conservation.
We need to think big about our future and the environment, because leaving our state cleaner and greener than it is today is not only our responsibility, it is our duty. A clean environment is critical to the health of our people and to the long-term economic prosperity of our state.
So far, I have been the one candidate consistently speaking up for the environment throughout this campaign. Just two weeks ago during a televised debate on the economy, I was the only candidate to discuss how integral a healthy environment is to our economic success, and to talk about the importance of conservation and the creation of a green economy. So many people commented on it that we even put together a clip of some of the highlights.
I have also proposed a Cool Cities Assistance Initiative which will aid North Carolina municipalities that sign the US Mayor's Climate Protection Agreement, pledging to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, with grants and funds to help them meet their goals. So far, 37 North Carolina cities and towns have signed the Mayors’ Agreement and been recognized by the Sierra Club as a “Cool City” – 4th most in the nation!
North Carolina can be a national leader in conservation, the development of green technology, and the establishment of a green economy. And as Governor, that will be one of my priorities.
I'm committed to building a greener North Carolina.
Bev
